Shooting Tips:
1. For low shots, position on both knees on ground, not on 1 knee
2. For turning shots, position body where shot ENDS and rotate to end position
3. For close shots, rather than using zoom, close in with camera to avoid shake
4. Use beanbag on ground or other objects to rest camera on tough surfaces.
Underexposure correction - use levels and adjust input end downward
Trimmer:
1. ctrl-shift up/down
2. i[n] and o[ut] to create in and out points while playing. Then just a[dd]
3. make time selection on timeline and select point in trimmer. A[dd] will
only add right amt for timeline selection.
4. drag above dotted line for video only. below dotted for audio only
Timeline:
1. can resize track by dragging it from bottom
2. select area to preview, hit shift-b (ram render) for smooth preview
rather than actually rendering!
3. you can then shift/drop other effects or transitions into the
area to see instant effect with ram render!!! (make sure you're looping
playback - "dark blue")
4. ctrl-shift-c to show or hide effects/event [c]ontrols
5. Q will toggle loop play on and off for selected area
6. ctrl-spacebar to play event even while in fx, transition, media generator dialog box
7. ~ key to toggle minimize tracks
8. read time as min sec frames
9. the secret to video montage is adjusting the track level slider for one or both tracks
not sure of diff w/ sliding transparency of event
10. ctrl-f11 to get max space for editing
11. when adding media from explorer, right click and drag. When you add
as takes, all media is placed in one spot. Use [t] to toggle between
takes. Quite powerful!
12. In adding multiple media, first one added is the one by which you drag.
13. options/preferences/video checkbox show time/timecode/frames
14. ctrl-shift-i to toggle on/off take names
15. can rename takes without causing a rename of media - good for reference
16. ctrl-shift-t toggle display of overlap [t]ime duration
17. ctrl-shift-k toggle display of regions/markers set in trimmer
18. ctrl-shift-w toggle waveforms
18a.ctrl-shift-d toggle effects on timeline
19. customize keyboard - right-by-frame and left-by-frame - assign to right/left keys
so same scroll no matter how zoomed in or out is template
20. to select a time selection while clicking on media (and without selecting the media)
hold shift-ctrl while clicking.
21. alt-click on ruler to set cursor position.
22. after making a selection, ctrl-up arrow zooms to that selection. very handy!
23. backspace - toggle last 5 time selections. Very useful for jumping around
timeline in areas you're working on. Couple with \ or ctrl-up arrow.
If you are playing, each backspace will play that time selection automatically!
24. ctrl-shift-u (or toolbar button) to ignore event grouping momentarily for moving.
This is better than grouping and ungrouping. This is good for splitting only vid or aud also.
25. to swap 2 events, right click as you drag one event to its new place. Then choose "shuffle"
26. to paste multiple times, select event, ctrl-c and ctrl-b
27. to move event up and down without horizantal movement, use numeric 8 & 2 keys! Use 4 & 6
to move left & right.
28. to trim acurately using keyboard, use numeric keys - first hit 7 or 9 to enter
trim mode and then trim with 4 or 6. To go out of trim mode, hit numeric 5.
KEYBOARD editing is VERY comfortable when stuff is on the timeline.
29. if vid/aud get out of sync, can right click and select synchronize to restore.
by slipping (rather than moving) will also synchronize but leave a J or L cut.
30. slip & slide - even on multiple events - select event{s}, hold alt and alter in/out points.
ctrl-alt on overlapped events. Slip (alt-drag) is when you have a specific time you need to
fill and the start point is properly positioned but you need more end material and you want that
as more material from the start, you slip at the end. Secret is to hold OVER media
and NOT at edge. It saves alot of actions!
31. ripple - either automatic or manual. ctrl-shift-f will act on all tracks.
32. ctrl-shift-a - deselects all! If you have a time selection and want to select
an event, just ctrl-click the event and your time selection remains!
33. V - insert volume envelope. You can use envelope edit tool
to select envelope points in a time selection.
34. Right click envelope to select different fade types (which
seem to parallel keyframe types as well.
35. Shift-V resets all envelope points
36. Use presets for track motion position, etc.
37. For heavy effects/transitions, select tools/render to new track which is then inserted into timeline
38. In pan/crop, can double click right bottom time to select specific time in clip for new keyframe, etc.
39. For finer degree of control over audio, use quantitize to frames (under options)
40. In pan/crop where many keyframes have been set, you can speed or slow over time
the effect by shift click first and last and then alt-click last and drag
right (to speed) or left (to slow)
41. To fine tune volume (for example, remove clicking noise of camera during change
position in filming), split audio event (after quantize to frame) and
lower gain just of click.
Edit Details: (view/edit details)
use dropdown
useful for "lock" switch and normalize switch settings
useful for showing/setting event length
useful for fine tuning of clip length and timeline position
Transitions:
1. don't forget you can fine tune them and save presets
2. play with transition keyframes as well and effects and media generators as well
FX:
1. can save effects combinations (more than one fx) from effects window
2. right click effects (green) control for options

of
Media Pool:
handy for grouping like media types (pre-chuppa,etc)
Scrolling Credits:
1. select area on timeline for adding media (or generated) per a certain length.
This is very handy for scrolling text where you would select area, right click,]
insert generated media and select scrolling text
2. Or (better) insert scrolling text style, decide on length and set in
text dialog and then drag (not control drag) text event until you see repeat loop notch.
3. Explore scrolling credits for text effects for weddings!
Effects!
1. Gaussian blur with various channels hidden or shown!
2. Using nested veg file, you can get excellent results of super slow motion.
in the original file, slow the clip and save the veg file. Import that
veg file into your project and further stretch for super slow mo.
3. To overlap (montage) one video on another, you can use secondary color
corrector and lower alpha channel on event on top track with good results.
You can also use fx chroma keyer and slide all the way to black and
use blur amount generously
Stills from Timeline
I have found the best results are obtained if you export the frame without
resizing or de-interlacing. Then open the bmp up in Photoshop and resize to
1920x1080 and then use the de-interlace filter with interpolation. Then try
using the Unsharp Mask, but not too much because it can accentuate the
compression artifacts. If you have a lot of noise you can get rid of most of
it with a light application of a Smart Blur filter or Despeckle filter.
Finally a little boost in Saturation will help with the muted colors to
taste.
